Jackie,
. will you let me know?????
I re started my Mayo clinic diet today. I have a question about the no sugar. Can I have honey or agave syrup???? I have looked at several items but am still confused
Thank you Jackie for helping me.
Hi Beth,
In the “Lose It” phase of the Mayo Clinic Diet (the first two weeks) the intention is to “reset” the mind and body by eliminating all extra sugar outside of what is naturally found in fruit and vegetables (you can eat as many servings of these as you please everyday and I recommend organic when possible.)
When we move on to the “Live It” phase in the third week, agave nectar and honey are good alternatives to refined white sugar when adding sweeteners back into your diet. They are accounted for in your food journal and listed as “sweets.” Only consume a small amount (75 calories including fruit juice, soda, cake etc.) per day. While sugars, sweet drinks and treats are high in energy, they have very little nutrition. The idea is to not try to cut them out entirely (as this will often backfire and cause us to overindulge when the will power to resist wears out) but eat them sparingly and wisely.
